Remember When Stuff Blew Your Mind…

Here’s my turtle obsessed son getting his mind completely blown. He ran back and forth along the tank and then had me carry him (as if he was swimming) along the side of the tank. It was well worth it to see his reaction to seeing a turtle in person for the first time.

Farmers Markets with Jack – 07.25 Hollywood

All these photos were taken by my son, Jack (2 years 9 months old), while in his stroller. They haven’t been edited other than my adjustment of the levels and contrast.

That's me buying some peaches.

Jack and I checked out the famed Hollywood Farmer’s Market at Hollywood and Vine this morning. It was incredible. The variety of produce, the colors, the quality – just amazing. Everything you’d expect from a big farmer’s market in this part of this World. The little man did a nice job being patient while I walked up and down the aisles. He’s taken to carrying a camera around and taking pics of random things. Sometimes, he gets a winner here or there. So, I thought I’d start cataloging our Farmer’s Market trips with some of his photos. It’s a nice thing to look forward to all week. Mindy gets to sleep in while he and I head off to the market. Lots of stuff for him to sample which will hopefully help him vary his food likes. Enjoy these snaps.

First Thoughts on Los Angeles

It’s been about three weeks since we left Brooklyn and moved out to Los Angeles. So far so good. The driving is still a novelty and having a car is kind of fun. Howard Stern and Sirius XMU make the time in the car fly. I’m in the car at least 90 minutes a day and am still trying to be very “zen” about crawling through downtown on the 110.

Silver Lake is as great as everyone said and it’s an easier transition moving here than somewhere on the West Side. It feels somewhat like Brooklyn (at least the Brooklyn we lived in), young families, nice local shopping and friendly neighbors. The main difference, of course, is you drive to get stuff rather than walk.

The food here is amazing, but the bagels are really bad. Suggestions? Dodger Stadium is an awesome place to watch a baseball game especially when the Dodgers are losing the Giants. One of my bosses, Chris Gibbin, is in the process of making a movie called “City of Jerks” and I checked out one of his location shots near the top of Runyon Canyon which was another cool new experience.

That’s really the best part about all of this. Every day it’s something new. New places to eat, new places to buy groceries, new people to meet, new roads to drive on, new places to see my kid super happy. He’s loving it here. Having a backyard, frontyard and a roomy house is making him a happy little man which is really what it’s all about anyway.

At Home with Mike Mills

I’d definitely put Mike Mills near the top of my design heroes. I love his graphic design, his music videos, his documentaries, his photos etc. On the Selby site they have a nice visit to his home and it exudes that kind of lighting, wild overgrown foliage and openness that I think of when I think of living in LA. With only 15 days left in my tenure in NYC it’s exciting to look at these pics and know that a new life in California is only weeks away.

Summer 2010

The piles of garbage in Prospect Park can only mean one thing – Summer is here. I caved early this year and installed our bedroom a/c today – may 31st. It’s almost a good thing I won’t be here to experience another Summer in NYC. We’re moving West in 30 days and it’s crazy, but good. Los Angeles is a brand new experience for me and I look forward to exploring the city.

Most importantly, this Summer is the 2010 World Cup in my home nation of South Africa. South Africa, who were handed arguably the toughest first round group of any host nation, will exceed expectations by getting out of the first round. Right now, they’re 11 matches unbeaten in a row including a 5-0 thrashing of Guatemala. If they can get 3 points against Mexico there is a chance they can pick up a point against either Uruguay or France and get out of the group. Anyway, much luck to the Bafana Bafana and to the nation as a whole – prove everyone wrong and show them Africa can stage a World Cup.

Also, this time of year (well actually Mindy and I think about it all year) we can’t stop thinking about Rhode Island and our two week holiday in Narragansett. The house we’ve rented in previous summers has been sold and with our impending move we’ve needed to skip going out there this year. What is it about that little town that is so fantastic? Here are some things I love about Narragansett (yeah – many are food-related):
1. lobster rolls from Monhans.
2. lighthouses
3. that first time you get in the water and it washes all the stress and city ick off you
4. buying vegetables and fruit from the little farm up the road
5. the train table at the local library
6. quick drives to wakefield and the crossing guard self-service flags
7. screened in porches
8. endless hand-painted signs
9. del’s frozen lemonade
10. drives along narragansett bay
11. brickley’s – the best ice cream parlor anywhere
12. stop and shop – it’s just not key food
13. radio flyers
14. suntan lotion / bug spray
15. quick trips to providence
16. sand
17. going to sleep with the sound of the ocean
18. waking up to the sound of the ocean
19. the picnic basket – best place to pick up a sandwich for the beach
20. daydreaming about the day i call this place home

Finally, this a song from the best album I have heard this year. “The Wild Hunt” from the album by the same name by The Tallest Man on Earth. Happy Summer.

Slim Angel Wide Angle Roll 2 – Brooklyn and Venice

Here’s my first color roll of film with the little Poketo Slim Angel Wide Angle. These turned out exactly as I had hoped and it’s so amazing to see the difference in the light between NYC and LA. I love NYC, but look at the February weather in LA.
